FLOATING COATS | Music By The Ton

Floating Coats are Jim Threlkeld, Joe Peery, Dave Buckhout and Dave Goldberg. Atlanta-Decatur-based purveyors of fine tunes, the Coats present "Music By The Ton." This ongoing podcast traces the good, the stellar and the surreal selected from a mountain of live, archived, practice, and one-off "guerilla" recordings. In addition, we'll continue to scour the heap of "classic" Coats recordings that trace the mild-mannered madness through the years. Continue to tune in as we shovel it all online. Enjoy!
FLOATING COATS ... Friday May 14 will go down as one of, if not the best Coats show ... ever! A powerhouse of a performance at "The 'Cove" (the Coats home away from home), this set features a core of new-ish originals ranging from full-on rock-electric throw-downs, to a few acoustic musings and a bit of prog/trad, all spiced to taste with classic country anthems. An instant classic, enjoy these select tracks from a memorable evening.

FLOATING COATS / Paying Homage (Coats Covers) [2006-2009]

FLOATING COATS ... This episode is devoted to the mashed-up universe of influences that help define the Coats' sound. Taken from the band's voluminous live and practice "stacks," this collection of covers pays homage to: Tin Pan Alley, Mid-Century Country, Classic Underground, Americana, Village Art Rock - with a special toast reserved for our mentors: The Kinks! And no, we did not forget the "Warren Hudson Memorial 2-Fer" (The Carter Family / The Pixies). How could we?

FLOATING COATS ... WRFG's (Radio Free Georgia) Peach State Festival show has been a regular stop for the Coats since 2003. Setting up in the "old bunkhouse" with the loveable nut / host, J.R., the Coats deliver one of their more memorable broadcasts here. Performing several new songs and a few golden "chestnuts," this pod is the modern Coats at their unplugged finest. There was something in the studio air that night. (Or maybe it was just the bottle of Maker's they snuck in.)

FLOATING COATS / Live In Little 5 [April 20 / August 17, 2007]

FLOATING COATS ... The gents played two gigs in 2007 down in ATL's Little Five Points, which proved to be stand-outs for the year (maybe because they were actually paid). The recordings, sadly, were a bit rough; but the Coats' irrepressible spirit shines through. Ah, that "WTF spirit" ... shines through every time.

FLOATING COATS / All Over Creation [Best Of 2007]

FLOATING COATS ... This podcast pulls together over a dozen select tracks from the several dozens of recordings piled up in the 2007 archives. The Coats have always shown a willingness to play just about anywhere. From the lobby of the Tula Arts Centre to the underpass of the Ormewood railroad bridge (with the more familiar confines of WRFG, Alcove and 5 Spot to boot), 2007 saw the Coats performing pretty well "all over creation."

FLOATING COATS / There's A Roach In My Beer [Best Of 2006]

FLOATING COATS ... The first half of 2006 was an active time for the band, a stretch now recalled simply as: "gig-a-month." The gents added a number of new tunes to the catalog, honed the existing catalog and performed a series of stand-out shows (Red Light and Decatur CD, especially). A few end-of-year tunes puts a cap on this fine collection from the archives.

FLOATING COATS ... By 2006, the Coats had become the unofficial house band of Chris Warner's Alcove Art Gallery. This "beaut" from the archives was the crossroads of gigs for the chaps, in that every era of the Coats was represented in the set list. That said, the new stuff played that night helped shoe-horn in the next phase of the Coats illustrious career. A good time was had by all. There was even a cowbell.

"Classic" COATS / Hard Headed Loser [2005]

FLOATING COATS : "Blendo" ... A demo recorded in Jim's living room throughout the first half of 2005, "Hard Headed Loser" is an all-original collection from the Coats "Blendo" years (with a few live Prog / Trad crossover tracks to boot). The Coats' musical narratives are often inspired by the ongoing narrative of "practice night." So follows "Hard Headed Loser." More a Kiwanis Club for lax minstrels (and an excuse to drink beer on Wednesday nights) than hard-working band, HHL lives up to the Coats' club-like tradition.

FLOATING COATS : "The Prog / Trad Days" ... Breaking and entering was not the lads original intent on the night of May 4, 2004. But they did what they had to do in order to make this recording INSIDE an old abandoned water tower. At the height of their Prog / Trad powers, this six song EP runs the gamut of their catalog at the time. The occasional passing MARTA bus only adds to the performance.

FLOATING COATS present "The MOJO JOJO Archives" ... Performing this night as "El Supersonicos," MOJO blows through a furious set of sonic mayhem. There is no let-up, as the show delivers on its pre-destined course: to wind up in a pile of distorted feedback-fueled wreckage. And, they were the opening act!
